Geronimo,
a 70-foot composite-built cutter,
was purpose-designed and -built
as a sail-training and oceanographic
research vessel for the St. George's
School of Middletown, Rhode Island.
The school's oceangoing curriculum
calls for six-week at-sea semesters
for up to 20 students -- that's
a tall order for any sailing yacht's
ability to keep a crowd fed, rested,
and safe. The first order of business
for New England Boatworks was
to research the myriad requirements
and standards that Geronimo
would need to meet to attain U.S.
Coast Guard and American Bureau
of Shipping (ABS) certification
as a commercial charter vessel.The rest of the puzzle involved engineering the yacht's systems in such a way that all the mechanical and electrical components were easily accessible for service -- Geronimo would be in near full-time use, and avoiding "down time" for system repairs was a major focus of the NEB engineering and building teams. In addition to taking St. George's School students to sea, Geronimo continues to enjoy a varied career that includes competing in the Bermuda Race and the TransAtlantic Race. |
