Transpac 2011 – New Elapsed time Record – The 46th Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu, Hawaii was another huge success for NEB’s stable of grand prix offshore yachts. Hap Fauth’s, Bella Mente from Newport, RI was recently modified for the downwind surfing conditions of the famous trade winds run (2,225 miles) to Diamond Head Light off Waikiki Harbor in Honolulu. Reichel-Pugh Design ( coordinated with NEB and North Sails ( adding a transom scoop to increase the overall length from 69 to 74 ft plus a longer carbon bow prod and upsized spinnakers . Bella Mente was rigged with a full set of Hall Seamless high-performance spars prior to the start of the race.( All the way to Hawaii, team Bella Mente’s navigator, Ian Moore and the pro crew had the hammer down to stay ahead of Doug Baker’s , Andrews 80. Bella Mente held off the larger yacht, Magnitude, and surfed to a new elapsed time course record for non canting keel boats of 6d 19h 39m. This time cut more than 1/2 day off the existing record (1999) held by the Reichel-Pugh 75, Pyewacket, owned by Roy Disney.
