Spring at NEB is all about launch and commissioning for several hundred yachts each year. Todayís classic New England spring weather finally arrived just in time for the launch of a Doug Zurn 50, custom built by NEB. The yardís latest new build project – Hull 58, utilized talents from all departments in a well coordinated effort that is clearly evident in the final product as the boat leaves the build shed to begin several days of in-water commissioning and sea trials before final delivery.
Head composite boat builder, Don Watson and the composite construction crew will leave engine and systems details in the very capable hands of Paul Dow and his mechanical/electrical team for sea trials and delivery. Custom joiners and teak deck proís led by Steve Casella have been working overtime to meet deadlines as the yardís latest new build project came together. Todayís launch was also a proud day for Craig Mello and the paint crew as protective covering was removed, revealing the flawless fairing and impeccable paint and varnish details NEB produces on every custom built yacht.
Upstairs in the engineering office, plans are already underway to loft NEB Hull No. 59. The composite build crew with help from the wood shop will begin setting up shop for what will be NEBís largest and fastest race boat to date. Stay tuned for more details.
Hull 58 leaves the composite build shed at NEB early Monday morning for the 10 minute transit to the travelift launch dock. The new build will then be carefully side towed to a berth directly in front of the mechanical/electrical shop for commissioning.
Clean hull lines of the Zurn 50 combined with a powerful jet propulsion system from Rolls Royce/Kamewa and an NEB built epoxy infused composite hull are sure to attract considerable attention around Newport and Long Island Sound this spring.
