Portsmouth, Rhode Island: On May 17th, an overdue warm and sunny Spring day, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo and Portsmouth Senator Jim Seveney visited New England Boatworks Inc. (NEB) for a facilities tour and to present a Certificate of Special Recognition for becoming Rhode Island’s largest and most diverse Clean Marina. A highlight of the tour, and an example of how NEB is going above and beyond the Clean Marina requirements, was the recently installed Trash Skimmer, the third in the state that is working to remove pollution from our waterways. The other two trash skimmers, installed in nearby Newport Harbor last summer, collected over 6,000 pounds of debris during its first four months of operation.

After the tour, Governor Raimondo told the Newport Daily News, “I’ím very impressed by what I saw. They’re known all around the world for the quality of their craftsmanship, and I’m proud to have them be in Rhode Island.”

The governor’s visit comes on the heels of an event held at NEB where the Executive Director of the CRMC, Grover Fugate, officially designated NEB a Rhode Island Clean Marina and presented Co-owner Tom Rich with a plaque to celebrate the achievement. Just before the official designation, the installation of the trash skimmer was announced by the 11th Hour Racing Strategic Director and Co-Founder Jeremy Pochman and Clean Ocean Access Executive Director Dave McLaughlin. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, DEM Director Janet Coit, and Volvo Ocean Race Skipper Charlie Enright, also spoke at the event emceed by Dennis Nixon of Rhode Island Sea Grant.

The speakers congratulated NEB at the event and highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships and the need for this type of program to be adopted by others to help protect our local marine environment. Charlie Enright shared his firsthand experience with water pollution and said, “with the introduction of this new Trash Skimmer, we have the opportunity to start chipping away at a global problem right here, on a local level.”
