ALEGRE

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Alegre, a Mills Design 68, is the largest racing yacht designed by Mark Mills to date. At 21 meters, the boat was built with a specific bias towards light and medium air. Mills reports, "We started by developing a clear event profile for the boat with the client, on which we built an extensive CFD research program with Dr. Charles Crosby of America's Cup supplier Cape CFD. The hundreds of runs of the 24 test hulls fed raw data to support in-house VPP trialling of hull, foils, and bulb combinations aiming towards a design which would be strong in light/medium inshore conditions, but was capable of longer and more testing offshore passages.” Hall Spars US, supplied a high modulus carbon mast with curved spreaders and a complete set of locking halyards. A custom Harken winch and hardware package completes the clean, yet efficient, deck layout. Hydraulics were designed & built by Cariboni in Italy. Alegre was delivered by ship to the UK in June and is en route to the Mediterranean where she will premiere at the Maxi Worlds in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
